Issue with ExportCrawllog command

Aug 6, 2009 at 1:49 PM

Hi all,

I am trying to use the ExportCrawlLog command to...well...export crawl logs. After I follow the instructions and have the extnsions installed on the server, I get the following error when I try to run the command:

Unhandled Exception: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: type
   at System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic)
   at Microsoft.SharePoint.StsAdmin.SPStsAdmin.GetExtendedCommand(String type)
   at Microsoft.SharePoint.StsAdmin.SPStsAdmin.Main(String[] args)

What could be the issue and how can I get this to work? Please help!! Thank you for any suggestions!

Thanks for your quick response!

I get the "unhandled exception" error (mentioned in previous post) when I run the command: stsadm.exe -help exportcrawllog

However, when I run the actual commands: stsadm -o exportcrawllog -t d -site "http://example.com" -outfile C:\crawllog
                                                          OR: stsadm -o exportcrawllog -t d -site "http://example.com" -outfile C:\crawllog -mt s
I get the following error:
Value cannot be Null
Parameter name: type
I also tried running it with the startdatetime, enddatetime,  parameters but still got the error message

What I noticed now by re-examining the callstack info in your original post is that it seems like SharePoint is not able to load the command extension class.

Recheck that you have followed the install steps correctly, and when entering the command line, use the exact casing (e.g. stsadm -o ExportCrawlLog -t c -site "http://moss.litwareinc.com") as shown in the examples on the home page and in this blog post: http://blogs.technet.com/paulki/archive/2009/02/04/using-the-exportcrawllog-stsadm-extension.aspx

Another suggestion is that when specifying the value for –outfile enclose complex paths in quotes.  I think I only ever tested supplying a file name only.

HIi....Thanks for trying to help me out.

This is where I am now: I tried reinstalling the extension: I followed the steps:

1.Ran "deploySTSADMExportCrawlLog.cmd" It did not come back with any error.

2. I checked and the file "stsadmcommands.STSADMExportCrawlLog.xml"
was in the   "...Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\CONFIG" folder.

3. Also I copied the "STSADMExportCrawlLog.dll" file into "C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC_MSIL" folder

I then copied the exact command and enclosed the outfile path in quotes. However it still gave the error:
Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: type

Is there something in the installation process I am doing wrong? Thanks again!

You are doing step 3 incorrectly.  There are two ways to do that

 - either use Windows explorer to drag/drop the dll into C:\windows\assembly or use gacutil /i (see here for details: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ex0ss12c(VS.80).aspx)

You can verify if it has installed correctly by using Windows explorer and browsing C:\windows\assembly and ensure that it is visible there.

Hi,

I finally got the issue resolved by installing the gacutil.exe tool (I had to install the entire Microsft .NET framework SDK v2.0 to get the tool).
I then ran installed the 'ExportCrawlLog' extensions from the SDK command propmpt. This seemed to do the trick and installed the 'exportcrawllog' extension correctly.
Hope this helps someone out there...

Thanks for your help!
